#281: The Hope Edition - Tony Adams Vs The World
Bands that hale from Stockport can often be found baying to the black and white confines that their town offers them; their music an almost direct comparison, never mind metaphor, of the Brutalist architecture, the rampant unemployment and the almost-perpetually grey skies that Stockport is synonymous with. Not so the case with The Hope Edition however. Indeed the clue is in the name, and the optimism that runs thematically (if not lyrically) through the core of their latest offering ‘Tony Adams vs the World’, is infectious.

#241: Welcome to Manchester - A Guide to Some of the City's Best Bands
As a city, Manchester’s musical heritage arguably far outweighs any other of its exports. Over the last 50 years, the city has given rise to an inordinate number of acts that have gone on to become household names; from the vocal harmonies of The Hollies and The Bee Gees, to the colloquial twang of The Brothers Gallagher; the dissonant poetry of John Cooper Clarke to the euphoric, almost angelic sounds of contemporary acts such as MONEY to the euphoric for very different reasons, funk of The Happy Mondays. The point I’m making is that every generation, every decade, has given us another musical legend and no matter how you personally feel about them as a band or solo artist, it can’t be argued differently.
Even now, with the buzz surrounding the reformation of the Inspiral Carpets, The Stone Roses - and the aforementioned Happy Mondays – finally dissipating, one can’t help but think that despite what some people say, Manchester’s music scene never really went away and such musical royalty reforming isn’t the pinnacle of our city’s scene. It’s far from it, and in fact it’s a result of it. There’s a slew of bands and artists coming up that keep the crowds flocking back to such eclectic venues as the Night & Day, The Deaf Institute, and The Ruby Lounge, supporting a scene that in itself seems completely oblivious to the pressures of the wider industry, ignorant of generic convention and seemingly living by the time-old axiom of “Fuck you, this is Manchester, we do what want”. And in a sense they do. While, yes, there are those bands that adhere to the cultural stereotyping of being bandLADS, there are far more acts doing something more than that, something on a more intellectual level than your average Fred Perry sporting philistine, recanting his amorous antics with all the colloquial verbosity of a Lancashire hotpot. From hardcore inspired garage rockers, to atmospheric and haunting producers and even reggae bands, there really is something for everybody in Manchester, no matter what your musical persuasion. Below is just a handful of acts that we think will be making waves in 2014 and beyond.

#222: Velocets - Guillver's, Manchester - 06/12/13
It hardly seems like two weeks have passed since the last showcase from illusive Manchester promoter Mr. Peeps. In actual fact, almost four months have been and gone since the the last one, and as a result the expectation and anticipation surrounding tonight is almost palpable. Gracing us with their presence tonight are three of Manchester’s most promising bands, and Cleethorpes-based psychers Kismet Ryding, who kick off the proceedings excellently.

#198: Feed the Kid - Ducie Bridge Black Room, Manchester - 1/11/13 (Photo-review)
Manchester based photographer Trust A Fox, once again leant his deft hand to our blog and caught the city's very own Feed the Kid in the intimate setting of MRO Black Room, above Ducie Bridge. Having formed early last year, the band have already earned critical acclaim from the likes of Terry Christian and if their reputation was anything to go, tonight was going to prove to be brilliant.

Being from Manchester, I'm lucky enough to have a rich and vibrant music scene right on my metaphorical doorstep. Every night the city plays host to a plethora of club nights and gigs in a variety of genres and venues to suit tastes of every persuasion. Being the city that it is, steeped with indie heritage, it goes without saying that within the burgeoning flock of bands vying for the spotlight competition is fierce, yet within this competition, friendships and relationships are formed which allow gigs such as tonight's to take place. Featuring two of Manchester hottest unsigned bands, Puppet Rebellion and Velocets, and the Wirral-based psychedelic Rise of General Mezmar who kick off the proceedings.
